Covid – 19 & Lanzarote
The Canarian Island Lanzarote…  one of the safest places for your unforgettable holiday!

The Canarian government is doing everything to guarantee Lanzarote a European holiday destination without fear for a Covid -19 infection and enjoying life in the sun like before.

Therefore they made a new decree, published on the 31^st of October 2020.
A newly published decree is stipulating that anyone who wants to come and enjoy tourist accommodation must be able to present a negative test result for Covid-19.
The test must not be older than 72 hours before arrival.

The certificate Covid – 19 must contain

• the date & time of the performance of the test,
• identity of the person tested,
• name of the laboratory that took the test,
• the result of the test.

Travelers are advised to download the mobile app “Radar Covid” and keep it working during his stay and up to a minimum of 15^th days after his arrival in his home country.

These two specific measurements are unique in Europe, also the inhabitants of Lanzarote are following the necessary rules to avoid infections very strictly and make it therefore possible for “you” to travel to Lanzarote and enjoy your holiday in peace and security.

 

P.S. If you follow these rules you are covered by the insurance of the Canarian government for all supplementary costs (such as medical costs, accommodation costs, …)
if you become infected with covid 19 during your stay.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced in a television broadcast today that international tourism will commence across Spain in July 2020 – “saving the summer season.”

He thanked the people of Spain for their endurance during what was one of the toughest periods of lockdown around the world, and warned that we need to be on guard for further outbreaks in the coming weeks, as we follow through the already agreed stages of de-escalation.

He asked the tourism industry across Spain to prepare to welcome Spanish tourists during the month of June, and international tourists from July onwards. He suggested that Spanish tourists will be able to travel in June to areas in the same lockdown phase as their own.

Lanzarote moves in to phase two of the de-escalation from lockdown this Monday, and we should have completed all phases by 22nd June.

The announcement has been made now so that airlines and tour operators can begin their planning. At this stage we don’t have details of security measures required but we will update here as soon as we do.

If you’ve ever been to Ironman Lanzarote, you’ll know it’s a massive competition, with more than 2,000 athletes and close to 5,000 volunteers and officials making it all happen.

Ironman Lanzarote is a triathlon event which consists of a 3.8KM swim, a 180KM bike ride and a 42.2KM marathon – each segment following straight on from the last.

About 50 of those 2,000 competitors are professionals. They will complete the course in somewhere between 8 and 10 hours, and they are dedicated to their craft full-time. The other 1950 are called “age groupers.” They’re people like you and I – most training hard all year while holding down a full time job, and dealing with the cost of entry (€450,) flights and accommodation in many cases and equipment prices that would make your eyes water.

There’s no prize money for them – they get a medal, a finisher’s shirt and the kudos of having competed in the world’s toughest triathlon.

The World’s Toughest

There are around 37 full distance Ironman events around the world. They all consist of a 3.8KM swim, a 180KM bike ride and a 42.2KM marathon.

Lanzarote is the toughest for several reasons – the swim is in The Atlantic, with the swells associated, the bike course climbs over 2,500 metres, often into a strong northerly wind and the marathon generally takes place in searing heat.
The drop out rate is high.

So, let’s have a look at the detail

The Swim

Ironman Lanzarote starts at 7AM prompt, from the beach. When the klaxon sounds, all 2,000 competitors funnel into the ocean – it can be chaotic!

The swim consists of two 1.9KM loops, following a line of buoys offshore, for a total of 3.8KM. Athletes swim straight away from the beach, and then turn left and swim along the coast, before turning at around the 800 meter mark, coming back to the start area to run along the beach and over a timing mat, before diving back in for the second loop.

Conditions can vary considerably, according to the wind. It can be a glassy and smooth swim, or there can be an uncomfortable swell. The fastest athletes will do the swim in about 45 minutes, most will complete it in between an hour and 1.5 hours. There is a cut off time of 2 hours and 20 minutes, and any athletes left in the water will be disqualified.

The Bike

The bike phase is the killer section of Ironman Lanzarote. The course heads out from Puerto del Carmen, inland towards Tias, then south to El Golfo, before turning north for several hours of climbing into a head wind. All the way to Mirador del Rio, and finally coming back down the centre of Lanzarote and into Puerto del Carmen.

The course is 180KM long and climbs over 2,500 metres. There are nine aid stations along the route, giving athletes, energy drinks, water and fruit.

The pro athletes will take around 5.5 hours to compete for the bike course. Most age groupers will take between 6 and 8 hours. The cut off time is 1830, and anyone still on the course will be disqualified.

The Run

Ironman Lanzarote finishes with a full marathon – 42.2KM or 26 miles. The run consists of 3 loops along the costal promenade from Puerto del Carmen. On the first, longer, loop the athletes run all the way to Playa Honda, and on the second two, they go as far as Matagorda before turning.

The run course is mercifully flat, but heat is usually the issue as the Lanzarote sun sears down. Incredibly, despite having already swum and biked, the pro athletes will complete the marathon in about 3 hours. Most will take from 4 to 6 hours, and many will finally finish their endeavour close to the midnight cut off.

Surf spots in Famara

The 6 km of Famara beach is divided into several spots, both left and right, but usually, they are fast waves and fun, manoeuvrable pipes.

The best known, from west to east are:
√ left of San Juan, rock bottom, long and occasional tubes, which has been chosen for some tests by the ASP.
It is the best-known spot I could say of the island.

√ the Cagao, wave also of fast and fun rock, short but for all levels of surfing.

√ the Famara Pier, a wave of quality, with left and right and rock bottom.
It is a fantastic option when a lot of sea comes in.

√ the rest of Famara beach is already mixed rock-sand or sand bottom, which is ideal for less experienced surfers.
here we find the El Barco spot, for beginners who start making wall,
or El Molino, a spot chosen by the schools for a first initiation to surfing.

The sculptures of the Museo Atlántico

The Museo Atlántico is designed to generate an artificial reef on a large scale finally complete and consists of different groups of sculptures.
√ the Rubicon, a group of 35 human figures walking towards a wall.

√ the famous Raft of Lampedusa, a reference to the current refugee crisis.
√ a group of children in little brass boats called Los Jolateros.
√ several hybrid sculptures (half human, half cactus)
√ the sculptures of a couple taking a selfie

√ a playground in which businessmen in suits play on a swing and a seesaw
√ the last piece is a human gyre which consists of 200 life-size sculptures placed in a never ending circle

The collection of statues situated in a sheltered area at a depth of 12 to 15 metres.

For divers and snorkelers

Daily divers are taken by boat to the underwater museum.
Also, snorkelers get a chance to visit the Museo Atlántico on a special snorkelling trip.
From the surface, however, you will only see the shapes of the statues, no details.

For non-divers

Furthermore, for people who do not have a diving license, a special program is provided to visit the Museo Atlántico.
This program consists of

√ a pool session to learn a few dive skills
√ a boat dive to Museo Atlántico.
The first dive is a dive from the shore together with an instructor.
After the pool session, you will dive the Museo together with a private guide at a ratio of 2:1.

The GR131 route is shown as the orange line on the map above which cuts through the middle of the island,
starting in Órzola, passing through Máguez, Haría, Teguise, San Bartolomé, Tías, Uga, Yaiza and finishing in the resort of Playa Blanca.

The pink route marked will be the GR135 which is a circular footpath of 182.9 km stretching around the coastline of Lanzarote.

Several airlines companies are offering new direct flights to Lanzarote.

Easyjet will offer three new twice-weekly flights to Lanzarote from Berlin, Manchester and Venice and vice versa,
adding these destinations to existing Easyjet routes to London, Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol and Basel.

Spanish low-cost airline Volotea has also announced three new flights to Lanzarote departing from French destinations

each Saturday from the 22nd of December up to the 9th of March, these three destinations will be added to the existing winter
connection to Nantes.
